Agnese Oatspell

Overview

Agnese Oatspell is a graduate of the Royal Guard Academy of Orsholon, the crown’s elite training institution, and a career soldier in peak physical condition. He currently holds the rank of Biwe Azemon (Second Lieutenant) and seeks assignment with the Royal Guard of Orsholon in Lawcrane. Raised without parents and shaped entirely by the Crown’s service, he measures his worth in rank — and rank, to him, is earned, never granted.

Background

Agnese graduated at the top of his class from the Royal Guard Academy, where he underwent six years of rigorous training covering combat, tactics, military law, siegecraft, and wilderness survival. His instructors remember him as a quiet but driven cadet — not the most naturally talented with a blade, but the most disciplined. He was found drilling alone after hours, honing techniques his peers had already abandoned for the night.

He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, archery, and tactics. “Biwe Azemon” translates from old Orsholonian as “Bronze Shield” — a designation for junior officers who have proven themselves in training but have yet to command in the field. A Biwe Azemon is authorized to lead squads of up to twelve soldiers, deputize civilians in emergencies, and act as the Crown’s representative in local law enforcement when no higher-ranked officer is present.

He was recruited by Elindine Raelle at the Enchanted Jackal Pub, on Hargus Hurryhouse’s behalf, and sent to Lawcrane with a party including Courtenay Nightglade, Ninette, and Beivalur Feverbreaker Godthiraskime to investigate a theft at Fubdo’s Farm — a journey that led them into the Dead Hills and the blighted village of Kerran. Hargus himself does not meet Agnese until later.

Agnese does not speak of his family, and Academy records list no next of kin. It is believed he was orphaned young and raised by the Crown — a common origin for those who enlist early and find their identity in service.

Personality

Gruff and abrasive, with little “bedside manner.” He is highly intelligent, especially for a fighter, which is expected of a Royal Guard Academy graduate. He believes the law must be carried out even when it seems harsh. His guiding principle is live and let live. He will not tolerate willful ignorance and has difficulty with people who do not respect authority. His honor is his life; he obeys the law even when it causes misery.

Motivation

Agnese Oatspell does not want money, glory, or freedom. He wants to rise inside the only family he has ever known: the Crown’s service. Raised without parents, he found his identity in the Academy, and introduces himself — even to a water-spirit — as “a graduate of the Royal Guard Academy.” He measures his worth in rank, and rank is earned, never granted. He is ambitious in the way a man ambitious for standing is ambitious: he wants to be seen, witnessed, proven. “I need experience and I need to be under a command that can witness my growth.” The Royal Shield, the elite guard charged with the Royal Family itself, is the summit of that ladder; like most who take the Crown’s oath, he means to reach it — and the Lawcrane posting is the step that starts him there.

Beneath the ambition is an absolute code. His honor is his life; he obeys the law even when it causes misery. He kneels to no one but the King — not to threats, not to power, not to a dragon. He would rather sit useless with a wound than let the group carry him, because failure is not acceptable to him, in anyone, least of all himself.

The code, though, is not as rigid as he believes. In Kerran he condemns a man for abandoning neighbors — “no better than a thief” — and only then sees that he himself had dismissed a dying village’s last child as a common thief. He is a man who believes in the law and is slowly, painfully learning that the law is not the same thing as justice. His pride is his armor and his flaw; Beivalur has named it: “Pride will be your undoing, Oatspell.”

Relationships

Agnese’s bonds were forged in service rather than blood — the only family he has ever known is the Crown’s, and he approaches every relationship as a comrade first: watchful, courteous, and slow to trust. Even so, the Lawcrane expedition gave him what the Academy never could — people who fought beside him, and a few he came to care for despite himself.

• Courtenay Nightglade — friction into grudged respect. The teasing of the early chapters and the sword-under-the-chin flashpoint over the march schedule give way, bloodied together at the mine, to gallows humor that turns into care. She is the only one who calls him “Aggie.”
• Ulrin — doubt, then guilt, then a recruit. He dismisses the boy at first (“A thief’s a thief”), the code flips on him at Kerran, and private guilt becomes “Heal the boy” — until, by the later chapters, he is quietly judging Ulrin a promising Royal Guard recruit.
• Beivalur Feverbreaker — the peer he yields to. Where Courtenay’s pressure makes him harden, Beivalur’s moral authority makes him soften: he apologizes without hedging for mocking dragons before the Mosae.
• Ninette — wary, functional respect. He notices what he cannot classify — Ninette walks “almost as if they floated… And yet, there was something…dangerous about them” — and is openly skeptical of their world: “Offworlders? That nonsense? Don’t tell me you believe in that claptrap!”
• Elindine Raelle — the recruiter. She approached him at the Enchanted Jackal on Hargus’s behalf — the first face of the expedition, and the one who judged him worthy to be sent.
• Hargus Hurryhouse — the mission’s patron. Agnese respects Hargus as a capable leader but does not fully trust him; the rushed recruitment and vague mission details suggest something is being withheld. He watches Hargus’s back out of duty, not friendship — a dead employer cannot provide the answers he seeks.

Guard Career and Service Record
