Royston Ranald

Royston Slayd Ranald (a.k.a. Roy)

Step into the Dragon's Stein Tavern, and the first person to greet you from the bar will most likely be the owner, Royston Ranald.   Royston is friendly and quick to laugh, and has a dry, sharp wit, like a good cheddar. He is also one of the kindest individuals you can meet, and will do anything he can to help those in need. As the saying goes, he will give you the shirt off his back, and the back to go with it.   But make no mistake - Royston (Roy as most come to call him) is not one to be trifled with. His friendly ways make him many friends, and some of these are on the questionable side. Cross Roy and you will find out who these folks are.   If you want information about the area in and around Tremer - Royston is the man to see.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Royston is in excellent shape, as he occasionally helps at his parents farm during harvest.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Roy grew up on a nearby farm owned by his parents. He was a hard worker, and a great help on the farm. But he was not destined to stay on the farm. He wanted something else, and something that gave him the opportunity to make his own way.   Tremer had become a popular stopover point for travelers on the Orsholon/Lawcrane Road. The Dragon's Stein Tavern had been around longer than anyone could remember, but the owner was getting old and wanted out. So Roy took the money he had saved working on the farm and through odd jobs, and bought the tavern.   He wasn't a great businessman to start, but his enthusiasm and positive, friendly attitude helped him build up the clientele. Between locals, out-of-town regulars and other travelers, he was doing great business.   But the previous owner had not kept up with maintenance on the building. That takes its toll on a building hundreds of years old. And those repairs cost money. Roy was forced to take out a loan with some unsavory types to pay for the repairs. (See his relationship with Hargus Hurryhouse below).   Nowadays, the debt has been remedied and Roy does great business.

Education

Royston grew up on the farm, and while his parents did their best to give him a semblance of an education, he got most of his education by learning from tavern patrons and friends. As such, his knowledge base is fairly wide, but not necessarily deep.

Employment

Royston has had two jobs: Working the farm for his parents, and owning the Dragon's Stein. But he is a hard, earnest worker and asks nothing of his employees that he would not do himself.

Intellectual Characteristics

Royston has a sharp wit, and is quick on his feet. He learns quickly, and is an information sponge. This gives him the ability to speak with virtually any patron at their level whether a simple farmer or a member of the royal family (yes, it has happened...)

Morality & Philosophy

Royston believes in "live and let live", and that everyone should serve to help others. Sure, he got into the tavern business to make money, but he also did it to provide a comfortable safe place for people to gather.

History

Hargus was passing through Tremer and stopped in at the Dragon's Stein Tavern Tavern for a bite to eat and a pint of ale. He struck up a conversation with Royston Ranald and in a short time discovered that Ranald was being threatened by some thugs over a loan he owed in payment for the Tavern. Royston had been on time with his payments, but the thugs were demanding more for "protection", as in "Nice tavern ya got here, be a shame if something happened to it..."   Hargus is not the type to tolerate this kind of intimidation, and told Royston not to worry any longer, that it would be taken care of. A few weeks passed and no sign if the thugs appeared. Eventually, a messenger came from Lawcrane with paperwork showing the loan had been paid in full, and the deed was now in Royston's name.   Nothing directly indicated that Hargus had any hand in this, but Royston remains convinced it was Hargus who ended the harassment. He has tried to thank Hargus, who denies having any involvement. Nevertheless, Royston welcomes Hargus with free victuals and drink whenever he is in town, and the Aerie Inn has a beautifully appointed room set aside for Hargus for whenever he passes through.

History

Bellasiel and Royston Ranald have a mutually beneficial relationship as the owners of the Aerie Inn and Dragon's Stein Tavern respectively. Their families benefited from the increasing traffic between Orsholon City and Lawcrane and the respective businesses flourished.   But Royston ran into trouble with some thugs after a problem with a loan he took out for the tavern. Bellasiel helped him out with a loan from her savings, which helped him, but caused her some problems of her own when the thugs found out she had money.   They are very frank with each other, and help each other out whenever necessary.

Relationship Reasoning

Their respective businesses are complementary, and they send each other customers daily.

Shared Secrets

Both have had run-ins with thugs over money. Hargus Hurryhouse solved the issue for both.

Royston is quite well-off for a former farm boy. Not excessively so, but he no longer has money worries.
