Fear is the Little Death

Drax kicks down the door and the room alights in chaos as the malicious meeting is revealed for what it truly was.

One of the Priests charges towards Drax, and the Reclussiarch holds her action. Drax runs through the door and swiftly slashes his scythe through an Inquisitor for a juicy crit. It rolls to Anatole’s turn and I see him take a bomb out of his bag, briefly fumbles, then successfully poisons a man.

One of our guardsmen reveals himself and swipes at an Inquisitor. He flies into a flurry of attacks, allegedly, but only land a single hit. From the other side of the room, Mo-Lester (Fester) has to decide if he reveals himself or if he holds his actions.

Another guard reveals himself and comes to our aid, slashing at an Inquisitor… failing horribly, throwing his weapon away. So, he brings out his backup sickle to take another swipe. I hear sounds of struggle and gurgling blood. A crossbow bolt flew into the hallway from where I saw Drax enter, pinging uselessly against the stone and statues.

I cannot see Anatole, I cannot see Kon or Fester. I cannot hold myself accountable for any deaths or loss of life I don’t participate in, but I do not feel good about it, either.

Kon moves to attack an Inquisitor. The Reclussiarch fires and misses her attack on Kon, Fester releases his arrow on Vilma, both attacks miss. Kon’s target tries to attack him and misses, three sickles slashes deftly dodged by Kon.

Remerand steps forward, points at the Reclussiarch and unleashes an Acid Arrow on her, the arrow pierces her, pumping her body full of vile poison.

I attempted to hex Misha, but have no success, because she has plus 11 to her Wisdom saves. The Inquisitors move through and attempt to stab our various allies and our guardsmen attempt to kill Misha.

Combat moves through for a few moments, with one of the Inquisitors stabbing himself in his attempts to harm us. Anatole drops another bomb on Misha, lighting her ablaze.

Drax dies in his bombardment, and Kon slays another priest, then gets dropped. Misha perishes to Remy’s Burning Hands. I consider my options, attempt to save some men I do not know, or revive Kon. To die on his feet would be his preference, at least, to me it seems to be. My choice is clear, my friend will rise to fight on.

“Mother won’t be happy like this… But this is not your time, stand again!” I Heal Kon for a juicy 10. Then dip away into the hallway. The Reclussiarch retaliates and with a critical sweep of her sword, swipes Remerand’s head clean off. Our allies scattered and dying, we continue on as best we can. Some guys attempt to swing at us, but Anatole and I survive, he leaves me to re-enter the fray and I am mostly boxed in.

Kon awakens from his slumber and attacks the Reclussiarch. I blast the man threatening me with two Scorching Rays, killing him. I move through his body back to the doorway and get attacked by yet another man.

Anatole bites another man to death, and I am formulating a plan to try and save Kon and Fester. Kon awakens and chooses violence, killing more priests, Fester is stable, but on the ground.

I rush a gout of flames at the Inquisitor in front of me, then swing with my staff, bringing him to death. Anatole reads the room and moves to throw bombs at the men and Vilma, making her lose her only spell, and Kon makes her lose her sword. Defeated, she attempts to placate us.

Vilma appeals to us, but after a brief respite wherein we take in our losses - all our allies lay slain - Anatole does not relent, and Kon follows suit. Axe brandished, it splits open her body and chest, a gout of flame ruptures from the point where the Axe has hit. The consuming hunger of Rovagug opens its maw and drinks her soul in.

We briefly discuss the tragedies of life, and how we know we’re at risk of death, but how we know the risks of the world. I gather Remerand’s head and bring it closer to his body, and align Drax and the other bodies, prepared for burial rites, or whatever it is that people uphold here.

I collect everyone’s conversation emeralds to bring them back to the armory. We gather most of the goods from most of the corpses, their sickles, weapons, bits, and bobs. Nothing major, to my knowledge.
