Chapter 6: The traitor

Those days were hard, we were roaming for days on end looking for shelter and food, we foraged what we could. But it was never enough, most left, only a few loyal stayed behind, me, Pargrak and a few of my other mates. The days of travel are so foggy for me, most of the days it felt like I was blipping in and out of consciousness. But from what I can remember my mates were all weary of me, like they had seen some kinda monster, nobody said anything though, not a single word. Eventually after months Pargrak spoke to me “I know what you did son, I know how you became like this.”. He kept asking me the same question “Why did you do it?”. I knew the answer, but I could not reply to him, there was so much shame. I broke, I told Pargrak everything. About the masked man and everything else. He was so disappointed in me, it felt like I was a child again, back home with my mom. He consoled me but also clearly held his distance. We went on for a couple more months, barely making it by, and my blipping in and out of consciousness more and more often. One of these days I received a letter from the masked man, he wanted us to meet again. In the letter it detailed a place not too long from where we were. I met him there and he offered me additional “enhancements” and I considered it for a long while, but I said no. He looked surprised, and then retorted saying “You still aren’t strong enough”,  but I firmly stood my ground, I had enough power, I was strong and was able to protect, I didn’t need anything more. Disappointed, the man left and said “Knowledge is a type of power, you will learn that one day.”. I returned to our camp with a foul mood, but it felt nice to be free from depending on someone else for my fix of power. And the next week was actually pleasant, considering the circumstances, although my blipping in and out of consciousness was still very much causing trouble. And then the day came…. When I had finally regained consciousness that day, I was outside in the rain, my body felt totally beaten, like I had just fought an entire army. Going back to our makeshift camp, I found myself surrounded by bloodshed… all my mates dead. And as if that wasn't crushing enough, I found Pargrak in his tent, his face had a horrific expression, I was not STRONG enough again. I had lost it all. My mates and everything, I only had one suspicion, somehow I had gotten them killed. I had no idea what to do anymore. I finally gave up, I couldn’t get my revenge on an invisible foe, and I was too tired to attempt any larger search.
