Chapter 2: The Recruit

In the beginning conditions were rather harsh, we were barely having enough food in our systems and our coin was running really low. Our leader, I believe his name was Lambert, ran us very efficiently, he was the one that kept the group cohesive, and somewhat acted like a disgruntled grandpa to me. Bastard used to beat me every day in our sparring matches,

He said it was for me to learn the harshness of the real world. But to be honest I think that goat fucker just needed someone to vent his anger and frustration on. We traveled throughout the border settlements in Sorna agel territories, defending the downtrodden and picking up whatever scraps we could use for ourselves. Apparently the whole mercenary band was created for people just like me, those who are downtrodden in life and who had taken the “Wrong fall”. It was nice, having a calling in life, it wasn’t really like I had had much time considering what to do in the future when I was still a young boy in the village. I learned using most weapons that were available to me: maces, swords, spears and everything in between. I quickly grew among the ranks and eventually became respected among them, I had made some real friends….. Damn it still hurts to say that. Although no matter how good I got I was never able to beat Lambert, he would kick my ass every time. We went on like this for three years, we worked up quite the reputation around the border settlements in Sorna agel territories. On occasion I would leave the group for a couple of days in order to pay my respects to my mother, going back to Granvall and pouring some alcohol on her grave. If you are a vraukian then I might understand the confusion but this is a sorna agel cultural thing, so don't question it. Either way, three years had gone by, I had officially turned 21 and we decided to head to a border settlement as we had heard that steppe goblins had been threatening the area. If you thought normal goblins are bad you should meet steppe goblins. They are deadly archers and ride giant fucking wolves, wolves as big as horses, fucking imagine that for a second. These steppe goblins were giving this village a real rough time, and well our mercenary group decided to step in and help the villagers. When I entered the village I got intense flashbacks of my own homes, and felt my resolve was strengthened. I wouldn’t let these people down too. We had built barricades and prepared ourselves, and then we heard it, the sounds of horns, and wolves howling. It had begun. Arrows were flying all around it was chaos. Before the battle there were 20 of us, after the battle there were 15. We lost 5 good people and friends in that battle, but we managed to defeat every single one of the those steppe goblin wolf fuckers. I myself managed to kill one of the steppe wolves by stabbing a spear straight into its mouth, or well it was more like it ran into my spear. Suicidal bastard. Either way, we decided to stay in the settlement for a while longer, bad fucking idea. The next night we were all tuckered out after a long day of drinking and celebrating. When we suddenly heard a shriek, in the dead of night. And after that the horns, those god damned horns sounded once more. This time there was no survival, they had a goblin mage among them, and our group was decimated. But I survived, why? Because again I was weak, Lambert sacrificed himself for me to flee, for me to run and survive. Again I followed orders, I was a weakling who still followed orders. After finally finding my own strength and self image it was quickly shattered. I was weak again, that weakness in me that I had worked so hard to remove. I ran once more, Lambert dead, but this time I swore revenge, Lambert had left a real scar on the goblin leader. I remembered the scar. I still remember every scene in that village, the faces of my mates as they died around me, their disappointment, their fear, their anger, all of it. It still haunts me, even now 280 something years later. After having fled I found myself exhaustedly sleeping in a local tavern's stables. I left payment for the tavernkeep of course. After that day a new chapter of my life started.
